Book Two, Chapter 2

Why is Winston ill at ease once he is alone with Julia?
- Because he is so old and she so young. Her young and prettiness had frightened him, and he was not use to living with women.
What does Julia bring with her that she has obtained on the black market?
- Chocolate
What are Julia’s ideas about the Party?
- She hates the inner party and can't speak of them without cursing. They are not as perfect as they appear.
What familiar sign does Winston find?
- The Golden Country, he recognized an old, close-bitten pasture, with a footpath wandering across it and a molehill here and there.
What is the significance of the thrush music?
- It symbolizes the moment for him and the rebellion they are committing. The way the bird can do what it wants and sing whatever way it wants to and that is what winston wishes to do. Be free to sing his own song.
What does Winston mean when he says that he loves Julia all the more because she has had scores of sexual encounters?
- It shows that she is not pure and the animal instinct of people, which Winston loves
